Village life

Doany village is at the heart of the Shambala experience.

The magic here lies in the bridge between worlds co-created by the village, Maxime, and visitors of Shambala.

The aim is symbiotic: mutual enrichment via building connection, understanding, and respect.

We achieve this through curiosity and play, in which village life is rich.

symbiosis and spice

Village culture displays skills and a relationship with life alien to much of the world...and embraces visitors. Alongside the joyful encounters that arise with a visit to Shambala,  we facilitate workshops celebrating the mastery and resourcefulness evident Malagasy lifestyle, and if you have a skill to share, we'll support you in hosting your own for them.

From building traditional Malagasy houses, card games, up-cycling, herbalism, or even weaving natural material, get stuck in, not only developing your skills, but also those of the village.

Crew together after successful adventure

There are 4 boys who have become part of the Shambala family, and embarked on apprenticeships supporting the project. They bring incredible magic and cheekiness, and we are delighted to have the opportunity to support their schooling, and guide them in their various areas of interest (cooking, mechanics, skippering, and guiding adventures).

With Kevin, Jean-louis, Servio, Jeremy, and Jo-jo on board, enchanting and unforgettable fun is certainly in store for Shambala’s guests!

trust

This is all possible because of the intimate trust between the village and Maxime, developed during the 7 years that he has called this place home. Through these relationships he's familiar with the language and nature of Malagasy life. By involving himself fully amongst the village and local team during Shambala's construction, and hosting a Workaway program,  a remarkable gateway for skill exchange has formed.
